Dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid which is a naturally occurring sugar compound found in our body. Hyaluronic acid (HA) helps maintain skin volume by attracting and binding water, giving the skin a smooth, plump appearance. However, with time, UV exposure and environmental factors, the hyaluronic acid in the skin diminishes and collagen breaks down causing fine lines and wrinkles to appear. Injectable HA acts like a sponge, attracting and binding water and therefore is an ideal substance to temporarily replace natural HA, reducing wrinkles and restoring the and firmness lost.

Dermal fillers are a gel like substance and vary in consistency with thin dermal fillers which flow easily, to thicker fillers which are firmer and last longer and provide more lift.

The latest fillers at Jeunesse MedSpa^® contain local anesthetic combine with the filler which significantly reduces the pain. The use of the other fillers that do not contain anaesthetic can be made more tolerable with the use of local anaesthetic cream to the treated area or a nerve block prior to injection (like what the dentist does). The dermal filler is then comfortably injected into the treated area to fill out the line, wrinkle or fold.

There is usually some transient redness after the injections. Swelling is also present after the procedure, especially with any lip enhancement procedure, which usually resolves in 24-48 hours.

Bruising can also occur, and if it does, it can take a week to heal. Make-up can be worn soon after treatment should there be a need, using a clean brush.

If you have a history of cold sores and the treatment area is around the mouth, then you should notify your treating doctor. You may be instructed to take anti-viral medications prior to treatment if this is the case.
