Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is a fairly common treatment that uses manual exfoliation of the top layers of the skin to remove fine hair and to remove dead skin cells. It is a safe and effective treatment that will remove fine vellus hair and improve the texture and tone of the skin, aiding in better absorption of both treatment and at home products. A very delicate blade, similar to that used for shaving, is used to remove the upper layer of dead skin and debris, which allows the healthy newer skin cells of the face to come to the surface. After this simple procedure, your skin’s healthy, natural glow and radiance is restored.It is suitable for most skin conditions except for those with inflamed breakouts, sensitive / broken skin or skin with thick terminal hairs.

How long does Dermaplaning take to perform?

The treatment begins with agent deep cleansing of the skin and ends with a calming masque and application of a makeup touch-up. The derma planing process takes about 30 minutes. Its best to allow about 45-60 for the entire treatment.

How often should I have Dermaplaning done?

For most patients, the skin-enhancing effects of dermaplaning lasts about 3-4 weeks. It is generally safe to repeat the procedure after 2-3 weeks, depending on the patient’s unique skin type and whether they have had other procedures performed.

Will Dermaplaning make my facial hair grow faster or darker?

No. It is a common myth that shaving and similar procedures like dermaplaning will cause facial hair to grow faster, grow back fuller or become darker. Dermaplaning will not make hair darker, fuller or cause hair to grow faster. In fact, one of the most beneficial effects of dermaplaning is to remove the vellus hair. Vellus hair is the short, fine, light-coloured hair that covers all skin surfaces with only a few exceptions such as: the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, naval and lips.

Is there any down-time with Dermaplaning?

There is no down-time with dermaplaning skin care procedures. Most people experience a very small amount of redness of the skin for just a few hours after the procedure. However, this is very easily concealed with make-up. A free makeup touch-up is included with the dermaplaning procedure.

Is it safe to have a non-surgical treatment, like Botox® or Dermal filler, during the same office visit?

Facial cosmetic procedures such as Botox® and Dermal fillers injections are performed by our cosmetic doctors. Our staff is committed to providing the safest, most comprehensive and efficient treatments and skin care to our patients. We frequently coordinate office visits so that patients may see our doctor during the same time they are here for skin care. In most cases, patients see the dermal therapist for skin treatments prior to seeing the doctor.

Are there risks with Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is an effective way to resurface the skin. However, care must be taken to remain only the superficial layer of the skin. When the blade enters the deeper layers of the dermis you can expect small areas of pinpoint bleeding. For this reason, derma planing should be done by a physician or under direct physician supervision.
