As we age, the hollowing of the temples occur, because of changes in the skeletal structure, fat volume, muscle, and the underlying fascia (connective tissue). The temple hollows are due to the reduction in volume of the temples with loss of roundness. It typically starts in the mid 20s and becomes really obvious in the 40s, and is particularly more so in runners and those who keep themselves very lean.
Temple hollows can cause the face to appear gaunt and skeletal. They are often one of the first areas of the face to lose volume with weight loss. Often hair is styled to cover temples hollows and hides volume loss in the area.
It is easy to replace this volume loss and fill the depression in the temple, with dermal filler.
The dose required for dermal filler of the temples is variable. Typically 1-2 mls of filler is required to revolumise both temples. This assessed and discussed with you at the initial consultation. This is a relatively painfree procedure. Additionally, the fillers all contain lidocaine (anaesthetic) for your comfort. Ice is always used to decrease pain and to reduce the risk of bruising. A numbing cream may be applied to the area prior to the treatment (30 minutes prior is ideal) if required. The area is cleaned with anti-septic. The doctor the marks the area to be injected. The doctor will inject using a very fine needle. Then pressure with gauze will be applied. Bruising occurs in a significant number of cases. Swelling in the injection area will occur. This will laser for 48 hours Asymmetry: Sometimes one side is better treated than the other, this is usually because the patient is asymmetrical to start with. Infection is a very rare complication, but always a possibility when the needle goes into the skin. Necrosis (blood vessel being blocked, interfering with blood supply to the skin) is very rare. This could lead to scarring Blindness There have been over 100 cases reported in the world, so it is very rare, but also very serious. Need for further treatment: With temples, it take several syringes of product to get to where the patient wants to be. The effect of the dermal filler will be obvious immediately Most of the swelling from the dermal filler will have resolved by 2-3 days after the procedure. There may be a small amount of swelling for even 2-4 weeks after the procedure. The answer to this is very individual and depends on the patient’s anatomy, metabolism, the dose, the placement, the product etc. Typically results can last up to a year or more in some patients, especially with touch-up treatments performed at 6 months.
