Have you ever had the urge to sneeze while having your frown treated with wrinkle relaxer injections or while tweezing / threading your eyebrows? If your answer is yes, don’t worry, there’s nothing wrong with you. It’s a common reaction and about 1/3 of people having injections either sneeze or feel that they are going to sneeze.
So what causes this ?
Sneezing, also called sternutation, is your body’s way of removing an irritation from your nose.
Sneezes are triggered by stimulation of the Trigeminal nerve, one of the cranial nerves which supplies the face (as shown in the diagram below).
The Trigeminal nerve connects the face to the brain and transmits sensations between them. It has three branches; the ophthalmic, maxillary and madibular branches. The one worth talking about here is the ophthalmic branch, which supplies nerves to the cornea and iris, the forehead, parts of the sinus and mucous membranes in the nose, and to the skin of the eyelids, eyebrows, and nose
Anything that stimulates branches of the trigeminal nerve can make you sneeze.
When we treat the frown area, a small amount of wrinkle relaxer is injected into the areas supplied by the Trigeminal nerve as shown below.
Injecting the frown stimulates “tickles” the Trigeminal nerve and causes excitement of the nerve in the nasal area as well…which triggers a sneezing response. Some patients just feel an urge to sneeze or a tickle in the nose. This is normal.
What’s more, when we treat the frown area, the stimulated Trigeminal nerve that causes us to sneeze also causes us to tear up.
Nothing can stop you sneezing when you have wrinkle relaxer frown treatment. Who is affected by the sneeze is very random and it happens to some but not others. Fortunately it does not affect the treatment or results of wrinkle relaxer injections.
So the next time you sneeze during your treatment be assured it is normal!
